Ice islands are large pieces of thick, multi-year shelf ice that breaks off of areas such as the northwestern coastline of Ellesmere Island. Ice islands like the one shown in Figure can be tens of meters thick and several kilometers across and may become entrained in the Beaufort Gyre and drift into U.S. Arctic waters. Figure The InSAR data highlight a significant contrast in ice-flow dynamics between the east and west sides of the ice cap. Ice movement west of the main north-south divide is dominated by relatively uniform 'sheet' flow, but three fast-flowing outlet glaciers that extend 14 . Science Summary: Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for at least two consecutive years. It is found under approximately one fourth of the Northern Hemisphere's land surface.

book flow line in a surge area of the Barnes Ice Cap, Baffin Island, N.W.T., Canada revealed a layer of basal temperate ice 30 m thick. Glaciology became my principal focus in the s, as I sought to understand the genesis of glacial landforms.

I spent 15 years working on Barnes Ice Cap, Baffin Island, focusing on the mechanics of moraine formation at the margins of polar ice sheets and on the temperature distribution and mechanics of deformation in such ice sheets.
